Stale Packages?

A designer recently remarked to me that make-up package design is “stale”. I see his point. When speed-to-market and cost savings are primary criteria, it can crush creativity. But after conceding this point, I respectfully disagree.

In this issue, we dedicate 10 pages to the International Package Design Awards’ finalists. The creativity demonstrated through these package designs is inspirational, and, I’d like to point out a few finalists in the cosmetics categories that should change this designer’s mind. Take Pout Plump, for example. The outer package is a bag plumped with air. Or L’Oréal’s Volume Shocking Mascara, housed in a dual-ended container with a memorable shape. Elizabeth Arden’s eyeshadow quads feature stunning graphics. Cover Girl’s Pressed Powder compacts also demonstrate beautiful artistry. These are just a few of many impressive packages. To view all of the finalists and packaging supplier information, turn to page 44.

This issue, we also have features on fun and functional jewelry, tubes and designing for targeted age groups. Once again, the innovation is impressive. I especially love the look of BONNEBELL’s f’Lip Style gloss, mentioned in our feature Design for the Ages (see page 66).

In other news, I will be stepping down as editor after this issue in order to spend more time with my toddler. The torch will pass to Ava Caridad, an industry veteran who has most recently served as the associate editor of our sister publication, Happi magazine. I wish her well.

Best Regards,
